Over the last few weeks we have been looking at three stories written by the author Julia Donaldson. We really enjoyed all three stories and talked a lot abut how they were similar and how they were different. We discovered that all of the stories we read by Julia Donaldson were written in rhyme but the setting and characters in her stories usually changed. We listened to the stories lots of times and enjoyed watching the animations of them. We did lots of fun activites to help us explore the stories.
The first story we shared was The Gruffalo.
We really enjoyed meeting all the diffrent characters along the story and thought the little mouse was very sneaky! We watched The Gruffalo animation and then tried to use some similar expression when we read exracts from The gruffalo in our groups. Later in the week we looked closely at Julia Donaldson's description of the Gruffalo, we really liked all the adjctives she used to describe him. After, we drew our own pictures of the Gruffalo and labelled him using the language used by Julia Donaldson. We also made and painted salt dough models of the Gruffalo, we made sure we included all of his interesting features.
The following week we shared the story of The Gruffalo's Child.
The Gruffalo's child was our favourite of the three stories we shared. We thought the Grufallo's child was very brave but also a bit silly for not listening to her Daddy. We spent some time comparing the stories of The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child. We found out that many of the characters in both stories were the same but there was an extra character in The Gruffalo's Child. We also found out that the stories were both set in a forest but one story was set in the sprng and the other in the winter. At the end of the week we wrote a book review about The Gruffalo's child.
Finally, we shared the story of Room on the Broom.
We lovedjoining in with this story. Our favourite line in the story
'the witch tapped her broomstick and woosh they were gone!'
We also enjoyed joining in with the witches spell:
'Iggety, ziggety, zaggety, ZOOM!'
We wrote our own spells and then used book creator on the iPads o 2Simple on the computer to experiment with different fonts for writing them. Laterin the week we drewimages of the mud monster and the witch and labelled them using extracts from the text. For our homework we desigend some fantastice broomsticks!
