As part of our dinosaur theme we visited the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff. We began our visit with a look around The Evolution of Wales exhibition which took us on an amazing journey from the very beginnings of time to the present day. The story began in space with the Big Bang and took us along a 4,600 million-year journey which brought us face to face with volcanoes, fossils, dinosaurs and wooly mammoths along the way. We found out how life evolved and which dinosaurs roamed the land. Take a look at some of our pictures. After all that excitement it was time for a spot of lunch with our friends and teachers before our Sounds of the DInosaurs music workshop in the Clore Discovery Centre. First we were able to handle some real dinosaurs bones, we even got to look at some fossilised dinosaur poo! After, we imagined what noises dinosaurs may have made and took part om a sound-based story about a forest at the time of the dinosaurs. What a busy day! Following our visit to the museum we learnt all about dinosaurs diets. We found out that some dinosaurs were omnivores, some were herbivores and some were carnivores. We learnt about some unusual dinosaurs such as the Yulong and the Saltopus and found out what type of diet they had. We used the laptops to make bar charts to show how many of the new dinosaurs we had learnt about were herbivores and how many were carnivores. We also learnt ho to make animations using the Smoovie app on our iPads. We worked with our friends and used dinosaur figures to create a short animation. We learnt that we needed to move the dinosaurs in very small step to help our animations flow. We really enjoyed making our animations.

We really enjoyed sharing the story of The Twits during World Book Week. Mr and Mrs Twit were a horrible pair but they were great to read about. Our favourite part of the story was when Mrs Twit made Mr Twit's wormy spaghetti, it was disgusting but very funny! We used lots of adjectives to describe Mr and Mrs Twits and made wanted posters about Mr Twit. On Thursday we came to school dressed as our favourite Roald Dahl character. We had Matildas, witches, BFGs, Oompa Loompas, Fantastic Mr foxes and many more! We looked fantastic, take a look at some of our costumes below. During our special day in our costumes, we did lots of fun activities. We made collages of Mr Twit's wormy spaghetti and labelled it. We used labels to describe pictures of Mr Twit's beard and we used the iPads to work on our wanted posters. Have a look at some pictures of us working hard and having fun during World Book Day. St David's Day was so much fun this year! As usual we all came to school in our St David's day outfits and we all looked fantastic. When we got to school we were divided into our St David's Day houses- 'The Blues', 'The Dragons', 'The Ospreys' and 'The Scarletts'. We spent the day doing a carousel of activities across the Year One and Year Two classrooms. We decorated biscuits using the colours of the Welsh flag, we created stories about St David using Book Creator, we painted hand print Welsh dragons and we made hand print daffodils. We also enjoyed watching the KS2 children doing some Welsh folk dancing, a flower dance and the chairing of the bard. We even had a home cookery competition and the infant first prize winner was in our class! Take a look at some of our pictures below. As part of our preparations for St David's Day we painted a class canvas. The design was created by a very artistic little girl in our class as part of her homework over half term. Everyone in the class drew or painted a part of the canvas and it was beautiful once it was finished. Have a look at some of the pictures below. We had a very exciting day today with a visit from Sophie Evans! Sophie came into school to help us learn to sing the Welsh national anthem. We felt very proud knowing that she used to come to our school when she was a little girl!
We have all really enjoyed learning about sharks over the past couple of weeks. We have learned lots of new words such as predator, carnivore, gills, plankton, dorsal fin and prey. Did you know that the largest shark is the Whale Shark and it can grow as big as a bus? Also, we found out that sharks, such as the Tiger Shark, have several sets of teeth so if they lose one, another one just pops into its place! Our favourite shark was the Hammerhead Shark because of its unusual shaped head. We had so much new information, and so many new words, to share about sharks so we decided to make a shark's glossary to share the information with others. We worked with a partner to create a talking glossary on Book Creator. We included text, image and a sound recording on every page. When we were in the hwb we created posters and newspaper reports about sharks to help share our new information. We are going to share our work with other children in our school. Have a look below at some photos of us working hard and enjoying learning all about sharks. In science we were learning about electricity so we did an experiment about static electricity using paper sharks. We had to draw a big shark onto tissue paper and cut it out. Once we had done this we placed the shark on a flat surface, Next we had to rub a ruler onto our trousers and hold it over the shark. We were amazed when the shark jumped off the table onto our ruler! We found out that this was because when we rubbed the ruler on our trousers we were charging it with static electricity. When we held the ruler over the shark the static electricity attracted the shark which made it jump. Have a look at some of our pictures. Over the last few weeks we have been looking at three stories written by the author Julia Donaldson. We really enjoyed all three stories and talked a lot abut how they were similar and how they were different. We discovered that all of the stories we read by Julia Donaldson were written in rhyme but the setting and characters in her stories usually changed. We listened to the stories lots of times and enjoyed watching the animations of them. We did lots of fun activites to help us explore the stories. The first story we shared was The Gruffalo. We really enjoyed meeting all the diffrent characters along the story and thought the little mouse was very sneaky! We watched The Gruffalo animation and then tried to use some similar expression when we read exracts from The gruffalo in our groups. Later in the week we looked closely at Julia Donaldson's description of the Gruffalo, we really liked all the adjctives she used to describe him. After, we drew our own pictures of the Gruffalo and labelled him using the language used by Julia Donaldson. We also made and painted salt dough models of the Gruffalo, we made sure we included all of his interesting features. The following week we shared the story of The Gruffalo's Child. The Gruffalo's child was our favourite of the three stories we shared. We thought the Grufallo's child was very brave but also a bit silly for not listening to her Daddy. We spent some time comparing the stories of The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child. We found out that many of the characters in both stories were the same but there was an extra character in The Gruffalo's Child. We also found out that the stories were both set in a forest but one story was set in the sprng and the other in the winter. At the end of the week we wrote a book review about The Gruffalo's child. Finally, we shared the story of Room on the Broom. We lovedjoining in with this story. Our favourite line in the story was: 'the witch tapped her broomstick and woosh they were gone!' We also enjoyed joining in with the witches spell: 'Iggety, ziggety, zaggety, ZOOM!' We wrote our own spells and then used book creator on the iPads o 2Simple on the computer to experiment with different fonts for writing them. Laterin the week we drewimages of the mud monster and the witch and labelled them using extracts from the text. For our homework we desigend some fantastice broomsticks!k cree This week we hae been learning about using moey in Maths. A visitor from the royal mint ame into our class to help us find out some more information. We found out about where coins are made today, and also where they were made in the past. We learned that in the past coins were made in the Tower of London. Today, machines make coins but in the past coins were made by hand, it sounded like quite a dangerous job! We looked at different types of coins from all over the world. They were very different from the ones we use in our country. As part of our detectives theme we visited Ton Pentre police station. We really enjoyed being special visitors at the police station and found out all about how suspects are interviewd by the sargent when they arrive at the station. PC Bennet gave us a tour of the cells and we were able to try on some of the police uniforms. We wanted to find out lots of information and spent some time asking PC Bennet our questions. He told us all about the equipment police carry to help them do their job. While we were at the station we printed our finger prints, they were all a bit different! We were able to take our finger prints back to school so we could use a magnifying glass to have a closer look at them. It was a great trip! We had such an exciting day on Thursday! It all started when we were delivered a mysterious envelope. Inside the envelope we found a simple picture of a coat. What could this mean? We decided to try scanning it in the same way we did with our first message which contained a QR code. Unfortunately the QR reader didn't work. We decided to try using Aurasma to scan the picture. We couldn't believe our eyes when a video of Detective Price came onto the iPad screen with a message asking us to solve his clues to find Princess Alexandra's jewels. The Aurasma augmented reality clues led us all around the school where we had to solve problems to work out where the next clue could be found. We found clues in the cloakroom, the dining hall, the climbing wall, the football pitch and the garden. Eventually, we were led to the quiet area of the playground where we found a locked chest with another clue on the top. We had to use this clue to help us work out the code for the padlock. Inside the chest were all of Princess Alexandra's jewels and another clue leading us to the culprit! It was so exciting! Finally, we were led to the PPA room where we found Miss Phillips trying on some of Princess Alexandra's jewels. Miss Phillips said she was very sorry for taking the jewels and has promised never to do anything like that again but we will be keeping our eye on her for a while! We really enjoyed the treasure hunt and loved looking inside the chest to see all of Princess Alexandra's precious jewels. We wanted to tell Princess Alexandra all about how we had found her jewels so we decided to create eBooks to give her lots of information about our search. Have a look at two of the books we created and some of our pictures from our mystery bellow. Take a look at the Aurasma clues we followed.
We really enjoyed our visit from PC Bennet. He gave us lots of very important information to help keep us safe. We listened really carefully to the things he told us and enjoyed finding out about the items inside his safety bag. We were really interested in the things that PC Bennet told us and we thought of lots of questions to ask him. Can you remember the answers to some of his questions?
Where is a safe place to keep medicine? Who can give you medicine? What should you do if you find something sharp when you are out? What would you do if you found a wallet in the street? What would you do if you found a bottle of fruit shoot in the park? What would you do if you found a mobile phone? |
