This afternoon we had a visitor from Tonypandy Community College who judged our science experiments and decided on which one was the best experiment from each class. He found it very difficult to decide as the quality of the work was outstanding. But who won?
Today we officially ended our Science Week with our school 'Science Fair'. All the classes have worked very hard at home and have produced some brilliant experiments. Some of the pupils in our class spent this morning presenting to parents and members of the community at a coffee morning. The visitors were all very impressed and enjoyed finding out all about what we have done. Today started out just like a normal day. We began our investigative mathematics looking at different strategies to add TU, HTU and ThHTU. But then we had a tweet from @alienfromvega. This is what it said, So we went straight to the website and we found the following message and video. If you are reading this then you received my message via twitter. I have been thinking about what items you earthlings could use. Well we video conferenced with Rabbsfarm straight away and decided to work together. We first had to write down some initial ideas, draw our ideas and what we thought would work. We shared our ideas with Rabbsfarm and looked at what would or wouldn't work. Pupils from both class worked together coming up with a plan, design and discussed the making together. They used video conferencing and it was great to be able to work alongside each other although we were in two different countries. We then began making our prototypes and tested them but from one not two metres to see if it would protect the egg. The group that worked with Rabbsfarm discussed their results together and how they could improve the lander and parachute, altering it accordingly. It was then time to test our lander and parachutes. We tested ours first in the classroom with Rabbsfarm watching our experiment and then we watched Rabbsfarms. They did their experiment outside so we got to see the effect of wind on the landers as well. SHORT VIDEO OF RABBSFARM'S LIVE Launch USING VIDEO CONFERENCINGWe came up with the following tweets which we sent to @alienfromvega with what we thought was best from the evidence of our experiments and those of Rabbsfarm. We had a great day collaborating, being creative, using critical thinking and communicating with Rabbsfarm.
Wow! What an exciting day we have had today. It was the official start to our 'National Science and Engineering Week' activities and we had 'Mad Science' come to kick start our week. They started with an assembly where we learnt all about the Bernoulli's principle. Bernoulli's principle is a principle in hydrodynamics which says the pressure in a stream of fluid is reduced as the speed of the flow is increased. We looked at lots of experiments with this including Mr. Curtis trying to show his lung power to finding out how a hovercraft works. It was so much fun. We then had a classroom workshop where we got to find out all about molecules and how they differ in solids, liquids and gases. Have a look at our video of the differences between the molecules in solids, liquids and gases. We then got to explore dry ice. we found out that it is made up of carbon dioxide. It turns from a solid to a gas and misses out the liquid stage. Very cool. We got to touch the vapour and had lots of fun mixing it with washing up liquid. We thought when you mixed warm water with the dry ice it was just like a witch's cauldron. We tested balloons. We put some dry ice in a balloon and by shaking it it released all the carbon dioxide. Then we blew up a balloon with air. We found out that carbon dioxide is heavier than air because when we released the balloons at the same time, from the same height, the balloon with the carbon dioxide in it landed first. We enjoyed today so much. Lots of us now want to be scientists when we grow up and we want to create science experiments!
Another action packed day today with Astro Workshops. This morning we learnt all about Newton's laws of motion. We loved finding all about Sir Issac Newton and gravity. We looked at aerodynamics and how to make a rocket travel further into the air. We then had to design and make our rockets. We had to decide how many fins it would have and we had to make sure it was aerodynamic. Then we had to launch our rockets using an air compressor to power the rockets. We timed how long they were in the air and then we used a formula work out how many metres it travelled into the air. GP's rocket went the furthest. It travelled 47.4 metres. We had so much fun and learnt so much too. This morning was very exciting and we were very lucky as we had Emma come to school from Astro Workshops. We explored meteorites, igneous rocks and dinosaur fossils. We had so much fun. We held real meteorites from space, touched moon dust and even held dinosaur poo!! This afternoon we have been very busy working on our prospectus for Rabbsfarm. We have a list of questions that we still need to ask and hopefully will be video conferencing with them tomorrow. We all decided what we wanted to use to convey the information and and working really hard to produce the most relevant and accurate prospectus we can. We experimented this afternoon with a new program called 'Sketchup' as we want to produce a 3d mock up of Rabbsfarm. We had lots of fun experimenting with the program. Here are some of our first tries. Also this afternoon we had an Art Exhibition in our school where all our wonderful paintings were on display. Our class did views of Clydach and used paints and pastels. What do you think? We have been asked lots of questions by our friends in Rabbsfarm. Here are our responses.
a) What subjects are you taught? We are taught
school offer?
c) What is your school timetable for a normal day? We have sent you our timetable and a copy of our typical day via twitter. d) Do any of your classes have swimming lessons? All the junior school classes go swimming during the Spring term. We go to Rhondda Sports Centre in Ystrad. e) Do you have a school council? If so how are these children chosen? Yes we have a school council. Every year we write manifestos and then we vote for one boy and one girl to go on the school council. The person with the most votes gets to go on the school council. We also vote on children to represent us on the eco-council too. f) Do you have cooked school dinners? What food do you normally eat? Yes some of us do have school dinners and some have packed lunch. We have lots of choice because they cook on the premises. We have fish and chips, curry, minced pie and vegetables, bagettes with lots of fillings and spaghetti. g) What are the names of the classes in your school? How old are the children in each class? Dosbarth Coch - Nursery Dosbarth Gwyrdd - Reception Dosbarth Oren - Year 1 Dosbartyh Glas - Year 2 Dosbarth Melyn - nurture (from Nursery to Year 2) Dosbarth Porffor - Year 3 Dosbarth Gwyn - Years 3/4 Dosbarth Arian - Years 4/5 Dosbarth Aur - Years 5/6 h) Can someone write a description of the area around your school? We will write a description and send it to you later on in the week. I) Do you have any school or class motto's? Our school motto is 'Believe and Achieve'. This afternoon we have had a fantastic time. It started with two tweets from @cake_snatcher... Well we all tried really hard and tweeted our replies to @cake_snatcher. We think our ideas are pretty good. (Our tweets start at the bottom and work their way !) We spent the rest of the afternoon using digital technology to find out all about Dylan Thomas. We used one of us to draw around and then put information about Dylan Thomas inside the body and information about his poems and books on the outside. We found out lots about him. We cannot wait until tomorrow when we use the information and write about Dylan in Welsh.
