Had a great morning with year 6 today at the tag rugby festival at Rhondda Fach Sports Centre. We won all of our games and got to the final but unfortunately lost 9-11 in the final. Some fantastic rugby skills shown, with FP winning a rugby ball for her skill and sportsmanship.
Today we had the chance to get up close and personal with some feathery friends. We had a visit from the Bird Of Prey Centre and learnt lots about these beautiful creatures. As this week is friendship week, we decided to make some new friends. We spent the afternoon in Dosbarth Coch and we each got buddied up with a new friend. We read the story of the rainbow fish and made colourful scales witha sentance about what makes a good friend. We also got to know each other and find out about our little buddies. We had loads of fun and can't wait to see our new friends around school. In science this week we investigated parachutes. We needed to first find out what makes a good parachute. We decided that our brave volunteer 'Bob' needed to reach the ground as slowly as possible so designed a test to which material would let Bob fall a set distance in the slowest time. We then used different materials to make parachutes and tested them by throwing Bob off the wall on the yard! We have been looking at healthy eating this week. We started by looking at the Eatwell plate and what we should be having lots of in our diets, and what we should only be having a little bit of. Later in the week we tried lots of different healthy foods in order to come up with some ideas of what healthy food to make next week. We have been looking at story telling this week. The children had to find a story at home and practice reading it with expression. On Friday the children read out their stories. We had stories about witches, Greeks and zombies! Great expression used and really captivated the audience. This week we have been looking at George's Marvellous Medicine for World Book Day. We have been looking at the characters from the story and looking at Grandmas perspective on the story. On World Book Day, we worked collaboratively with Dosbarth Gwyn to complete a carousel of activities. In Dorbarth Porffor's classroom we designed our own Book Day tokens on the laptops. We also made our own marvellous Medicine out of soap, petrol, lipstick and aftershave! Some of us thought it tasted delicious, others weren't too sure! We had lots of fun and felt inspired to read more of Roald Dahl's stories. We were asked by Mr Dacey to create a canvas for St. David's day. We looked at Welsh artists and really liked the style of Kerry Darlington so decided to use her work for inspiration. We really liked her work 'The Gift Tree' so decided to make our own trees about Wales. We first created different styles of trees and then thought about what Wales meant to us and included these things in our trees. Children from year 6 took part in a netball tournament this week in Tylorstown Sports Centre. Despite we hadn't done a lot of training, the children really enjoyed playing and showed plenty of skill. The children were great ambassadors for the school and showed great teamwork. |
