The children have had lots of fun this half term learning about some of the people who help us in our community. So far we have learned about how the postman brings us our letters, how the police can keep us safe buy looking for clues such as finger prints, how builders around the world use different materials to build houses and the role of a park keeper. Have a look at a few pictures of some of the activities the children have been involved with below:
The Police
We enjoyed dressing up as police officers and finding out about how the police use dogs and horses to help them. The police horses are very tall and help the police to see over crowds. We have been doing lots of writing too buy recording police incidents in notebooks.
Our finger prints are all different. Police look for finger prints to help them solve crimes. We enjoyed printing and looking at our finger prints. Magnifying glasses helped us to take a closer look at the patterns in our finger prints.
The Park Keeper
We have been finding out about how park keepers grow plants and vegetables to make parks look special. We have learnt about the main parts of a plant- the leaves, stem, roots and petals and have found out that they need sun and water to grow. We have planted our own tomato seeds which have started to grow stems and leaves. After half term we will plant our tomato plants into bigger pots and are going to take good care of them to help them grow big and strong.
On Thursday we went on a mini beast hunt to find out about some of the insects that park keepers have in their gardens. We took a tally chart with us to record what insects we found. We looked high and low and remembered to look in lots of hiding spaces such as in long grass and under flower pots where the insects may go to keep safe. We found lots of ants, slugs and worms and even found a centipede! Look at some of our pictures:
