To kick start our STEM week the children were asked to complete Science investigations at home to enter into our Science Fair competition judged by Tonypandy Community College. We were blown away by the response- here are some examples.
We had a fantastic week completing STEM challenges, we made symmetrical kites, explored with colour mixing, planted beans and learnt about the life cycles of plants, explored the weather and recapped Welsh vocabulary, built structures using junk material and completed a variety of experiments and investigations. To kick start our STEM week the children were asked to complete Science investigations at home to enter into our Science Fair competition judged by Tonypandy Community College. We were blown away by the response- here are some examples. The children enjoyed sharing their Science homework in class and did so well explaining the process and making predictions.

Our Chinese New Year topic was concluded with a celebration afternoon with our buddies in Dosbarth Arian. We had a wonderful afternoon sharing our learning with each other. Dosbarth Arian had prepared Poetry, while we enjoyed performing our Dragon Dance and Songs. To begin the afternoon the children were linked with their buddy and were set a challenge of finding out 3 things they had enjoyed learning about Chinese New Year in their classes. There were lots of lovely discussions and our Year 5 buddies asked some fantastic questions. We were extremely lucky to receive a delivery of delicious food from Mr and Mrs Chen. What an amazing way to end our celebrations! We would like to say diolch to them both. We all thoroughly enjoyed. Sharing a meal with our buddies was a perfect opportunity to get to know them more. We enjoyed finding out about each other and the things we like to do, we will use these to help us plan future buddy sessions. Each pair of buddies were given a a fortune cookie, we opened them together and enjoyed discussing their meanings. Year five were amazing at explaining these to us. We ended the afternoon learning about how Chinese New Year is celebrated in different home around the world. Check out the Let's Celebrate episode on cebeebies iplayer to find out more at home. We had had a wonderful afternoon sharing our learning with our buddies and are looking forward to many more. We would like to thank Dosbarth Arian for joining us and helping us learn more about our topic and for our beautiful Chinese New Year Cards. Also a huge diolch to our parents, Mr and Mrs Chen for their kind donation of delicious food- the afternoons celebrations will be a memory that will stay with our children for a long time. Happy New Year to each and everyone of you- Gung Hey Fat Choy. We have enjoyed learning about Chinese New Year as part of our Celebrations topic. We had a wonderful time sharing our learning with our parents during our sharing assembly on Friday. Thank you to everyone that turned up- we hope that you all enjoyed! We have enjoyed learning about Chinese traditions at New Year and have compared these to New Year celebrations in Wales. We have made lanterns, lucky red envelopes and Chinese drums. The children created invites to inform their families about our assembly, they used pic collage on the iPads to search and save images and wrote key information to inform parents of required details. In numeracy we have learnt about ordinal numbers and completed a variety of races to help us order ourselves from 1st to last. We have ordered numbers to 20 and have explored with sorting animals against a number of criteria. Next week we have planned to conclude our celebrations with a Chinese New Year party with our buddies in Year 5. We would like to wish all our families and friends a very happy Chinese New Year- Gung Hey Fat Choy!
That was a very quick half term! In Dosbarth Gwyrdd we managed to do lots and lots of great activities linked to St David's Day and our topic 'Marvellous Machines.'
We are enjoying building our own castles. We have used our collection of 3D boxes to build the models and this week we are decorating them. Have a look!
This half term we have been learning all about 'Brilliant Buildings.' Bob the Builder challenged us to find out about his work, and to learn about different kinds of buildings.
We started by visiting Mr Ryland's workshop. We found about about different tools and how they are used. We also built our own dens using materials from around the classroom. It was great fun. Next we read the story of 'The Three Little Pigs.' We thought about the materials they used to build their houses. We sorted different materials according to their properties. In our class we have built a castle role play area. We have learnt about people who live in castles and this week we read 'Jack and the Beanstalk. We have been busy writing wanted posters for the Giant, we used some fantastic describing words! This week we also threaded our own magical harps, and we have worked on our own giant beanstalk! What an eventful week in Dosbarth Gwyrdd! We have had so much fun reading The Gingerbread Man that the children have asked for another week exploring the book! Here's a peak at some of the things we enjoyed this week and we are looking forward to next week and what it brings! After reading the Gingerbread Man we discussed and identified a range of adjectives to describe him, using their sound knowledge the children explored with mark making and wrote their list of words carefully onto their own Gingerbread Men! We've enjoyed sound and word hunts around our outdoor area and have been learning to identify sounds and match them correctly. The children have been developing their blending and segmenting skills to help them read a range of key words. In Mathematical development we have been continuing to develop our counting skills, exploring one to one correspondence to ensure the gingerbread Man had the correct number of buttons. We used Gingerbread Man rulers to help us measure a range of objects around our school. It was so much fun! The Gingerbread man was very mischievous, he escaped from our room! Luckily he left us a note that provided us with a set of clues to follow. We were fantastic detectives and eventually found him! In our fridge!! We enjoyed a tasty snack and made maps of our journey around the school! We spent time thinking about why the Gingerbread man couldn't go into the river. We thought carefully about how we could help him cross safely!! There were some amazing ideas! We made and testing our own boats, bridges and rafts to help him cross. We tested these in water to check that they would be of use to the Gingerbread Man! Using a simple Gingerbread recipe we made our own cookies, some shaped like men, women or houses! We enjoyed being bakers but not quite as much as when we were food tasters!! We shared different words to describe the yummy biscuits and will be busy next week creating a display of our wonderful work for everyone to see!! It's safe to say that this week has been enjoyable and funfilled. We are very excited to see what the Gingerbread Man has in store for us next week too!! Da iawn everyone in @dosbarthgwyrdd for another wonderful week! Wow!! What an amazing start to the new school year. The children have settled in incredibly well and have made us all proud of the things they have achieved already. Da iawn pawb! This week we have spent time thinking about what makes our class a happy class, we have shared our ideas as part of circle time and have used these to help us write our class rules. We have thought about our special friends in Dosbarth Gwyrdd and have spent time thinking about the qualities of a good friend and painter portraits of our special friends in class. The children have been showing how kind, polite and helpful they are! We have enjoyed using 2d shapes to make Collages of our houses and have enjoyed telling our friends and teachers all about our wonderful families. We have used a range of materials to decorate our very own "mini me's" to display in our classroom to help introduce us all to visitors. This week has been a week to be proud of, well done to everyone. Here are some photos from our first day! Our quest to investigate our "Garden Super Heroes" involved finding out about Lady Birds. This week we enjoyed the story of the "Very Lazy Lady Bird." During Maths we explored number bonds to 5. We investigated doubling by making ladybird biscuits. We made our own weather game boards yn Cymraeg linked to the story of Incy Wincy Spider. We used our knowledge of the "Lazy Lady Bird" story to play "Story Twister."
We have had a creepy crawly, hairy scary learning week based around spiders. We have written our very own spider fact sentences and words and marble rolled sparkly spider webs. During maths we have been learning about subtraction. We build a spider web outside, rolled the dice and subtracted the flies! We counted how many spiders we could capture in 1 minute on the Funky Finger table and counted how many were still left. We used our co-operation skills to create a giant Incy Wincy Spider. One of our highlights of the week was using our co-operation skills to weave a giant spider web during Circle Time. Take a look!
