On Monday we received this video from Doc Brown... We have been busy this week, completing tasks, collaborating together and having Jungle Jonathan come to visit. We have used hwb+ to upload our work, videos and pictures.
We have had a really busy week. We have been looking at our local history. In 1965 there was a colliery disaster in Cambrian Colliery. We have been spending some time finding all about it. We used Onenote to put our research into one collaborative document. we are now ready to write our TV news reports about the disaster. Cameras at the ready. We have been creating maps of the Rhondda ready for our interactive display. we have been finding all about different states of matter in Science, exploring the differences.
This week we have had lots of fun! We had a special task this week to produce an interactive Harry Potter book. We were going to walk down Diagon Alley and as we came to different shops we were going to make things to put into our carrier bags. We started by writing a story about Diagon Alley. The story needed to include the shops we would visit. Next we created maps of Diagon Alley. We used the Diagon Alley chapter and had to create an interpretation. We used the 8 point compass too to know what direction we were going in. We then split our story up into sections to create our story book. Our visit visit was then to 'The Leaky Cauldron' where we created menus of wizard food and created a list of problem solving questions about the food we could eat. We had lots of fun making our problems up and working out the costs in galleons, sickles and knuts. Our next task was to go to Gringotts where we used Microsoft Excel to create a money exchange. We needed to change wizard money into pounds sterling. This required lots of maths and use of simple formulas. We then created the book list that Harry Potter needed to buy for his first week in Hogwarts. We used the simple formulas to add and then we used the sum formula to add the long columns. We are truly mathematicians. we explored adverts and what makes an advert next so we could write an advert for Madam Malkins Robes for all Occasions shop. we had to learn how to be persuasive and use rhetorical questions. We then created sale posters for the Owl Emporium. We had to work with fractions and percentages, working out what the new sale prices would be. With lots of bookmarks, carrier bags and wands made, we then had to put together the book. We worked very hard with just a few things left to finish off before we unveil our books.
We have had a great week. Monday saw us looking at the Iron Man and how to extend our sentences. We worked really hard on our HTU addition work. In the afternoon we had lots of fun in music and working on our skills in PE. On Tuesday we went the day working hard in the hwb. We learnt how to create 3d robots using Sketchup. It was really hard to make the 3d shapes we wanted but we got there in the end. Hopefully we will be able to use these to create 3d robots on the 3d printer. We then designed WANTED posters for the Iron Man. We worked hard on our descriptions. On Wednesday we worked on powerful verbs. We all tried really hard and came up with some great ideas. In Welsh we learnt 'Pryd mae dy benblwydd di? Mae fy mhenblwydd ym mis Medi.' and then we constructed block graphs of our birthdays. We all created great graphs which were labelled and accurate. Thursday we planned our descriptive setting. It was a river setting with a bridge and mountains. We had to use our senses to help us to describe the scene. In mathematics we looked at HTU but this time we were subtracting. In the afternoon we looked at patterns at home and in the environment. We enjoyed investigating the patterns and working out what we thought about them. On Friday we wrote our descriptive settings work. We tried very hard to paragraph, use similes, metaphors and powerful verbs. We then peer assessed each others work using VCOP and we gave them two stars and a wish. In the afternoon we had a mathematics challenge and then we had 'Golden Time'. Blog post by WH and JT
Photography by BG and LJ On Monday we read a story called the Dragon Machine by Helen Ward. It was all about a boy called George who saw dragons. The dragons got him into trouble so he built a dragon machine to take them back to where they live. In music we learnt all about beat boxing. It was exciting. On Tuesday we looked at the story and used VCOP to see how good the story was and how we thought the author could improve it. In Science we looked at sounds and how they are made. We looked at lots of different instruments. On Wednesday in mathematics we looked at the nine times table. We drew around our hands and learnt that if you add the digits for the answers of the nine times table the answer is nine. (Well it is up to 180 anyway.) On Thursday we recorded what we wanted to be when we grew up. Next week we will make aurasmas of our videos. In the afternoon we found out out the technology of moving toys. We found out they moved by cam mechanisms. On Friday we wrote all about our own machine. We enjoyed making up our own machine stories. In welsh we wrote a short description about what food we liked to eat during the day. We ended our day with lots of fun as we had ‘Golden Time’ to celebrate a fantastic week. Some of us played games together while others set up the Raspberry Pi and began to find out how to program. Blog post by BJ and LT
Photography by LJ and BJ This week started off with an INSET day so on Tuesday morning we had a task from Pi. We had to watch ‘The Lone Robot’ and describe the factoru inside. We spent the afternoon in the hwb where we did some awesome art tessellation patterns that we had to make out of squares, rectangles and also 3d shapes. On Wednesday, in mathematics, we investigated four digit numbers and explored lots of maths problems. In literacy we explored adjectives, looking at more interesting words to describe so we can use these in our big writing on Friday. Our Welsh session we looked at food and we practiced the vocabulary for food, looking at extending our answers. On Thursday morning we had a special assembly in the main hall, it was all about the NSPCC and Childline. We found out that the Childline number is 08001111 and that we were going to help to raise money for the charity. After assembly we did some levelling up sentences so that we could make them more interesting. Friday was very busy. We started with our Big Writing where we wrote a description of a friend for the lone robot. We were very lucky because we had another special assembly about Mad Science. It was AWESOME!. In the afternoon we had a talk with PC Bennett and then we learnt a welsh poem called ‘Parti’ is was cool. Blog post by TR and EB
Photography by LJ and BJ This week in Dosbarth Gwyn has been very exciting. On Monday after lunch we were about to complete our Welsh but then a video came through. We watched the video which showed a journey through space and then it led to our school. So we looked outside and we found a tin can connected to a parachute. So we then investigated the tin. We opened the can and inside there was a small robot. So it was suggested to take the robot's head off. When we popped of its head it was a USB device. So we put it in our computer. There was a file with four things. The first one was a video, the second was a QR code and two secret documents. We tried to open the documents. We tried 2999 which was the year the robot was living in but that did not open the document. Then we tried the robot's name which was 3.14159 and this opened the document. We had to decipher the code. It was a number code. The robot asked us to help him. First of all we had to write all about yourself and put it on a special website. On Tuesday we went t the hwb and the first thing we did was to create a pupil profile to help us write all about yourselves on Friday. we worked very hard to write as much as we could about ourselves. In the afternoon we created some brilliant 2d robot designs. We used PowerPoint and had to make and edit shapes. It was difficult but we worked hard to create our designs. On Wednesday afternoon we worked on the history of robots to help 3.14159 on his task to save all information about robots. we researched using iPads. Some of us used the iMac to download our jingles we created so that we could start making podcasts. Friday was a very busy day. We had an eco green flag assessment in the morning. We worked hard on our big writing which was all about ourselves then during golden time we set up the Raspberry Pi which we are going to use to code and create games in our classroom. What will next week bring? This week's blog was written by LLD and EB.
Well the summer holidays have flown by and we have returned for a new year. Our first week in Dosbarth Gwyn has gone quickly with lots of getting to know each other. On Wednesday we worked together to create a class pledge which we all agreed would help us have a happy new school year. We also worked really hard on our number bonds to 100. Miss Howells was really impressed with our knowledge and we enjoyed challenging each other. We then spent time filling in job applications for the class roles and responsibilities. Our applications were so good that Miss had a very difficult job to decide our jobs. On Thursday we started off our day with our daily 5-a-day challenge. We were street dancing which got us ready for the busy day ahead. We worked very hard in the morning creating and presenting our manifestos for the school and eco council. We all came up with some fantastic ideas and on friday we have the difficult decision of who our votes will go to. In the afternoon we became musicians and created some fantastic background music using Garageband for the weekly podcasts we will be creating. Today we voted at the polling station for the school council, eco council and healthy council. We were very democratic and used a ballot box and made sure our votes were in secret. We will find out on Monday who our representatives are. We then completed our big writing work and we produced some fantastic work achieving all our success criteria targets. This afternoon we created some proffil disgybl in Welsh. We learnt lots of new geirfa and found out lots of new information about each other. Our first week has been very busy and we have worked very hard. We wonder what next week will bring...
