Another week, another challenge from Heroes from History! Hubert sent us a video asking us to find out about coal mining as miners have to be very brave to go into the mines every day. We first found out about why people mined coal and what coal does for us. We then looked at what life was like for miners and their families living 100 years ago.

We have been looking at different rocks and the different qualities they have. After finding different types in the yard we decided to test them. We looked to see if they absorbed water, if they scratched easily, fizzed in vinegar and floated. We tested the different rocks and noted down what we found out.
We received a very exciting video this week from Hubert Higgington from Heroes from History. He travels the world finding heroes from the past and asked us for our help. Hubert wanted us to find out about Welsh heroes, we did a bit of research and found out about a local hero, Tommy Farr.
We used a Playlist on our Hwb+ accounts to find out more about his life and why he was considered a hero. The new term has kicked off with a very busy week! We started our swimming sessions which everyone really enjoyed and can't wait for next weeks session. In our maths sessions we have been looking at ordering numbers and carried out an investigation into putting numbers on a number line. We love using the new laptops and used some maths games to help us understand it.
In literacy we have been writing biographies about famous people. We carried out lots of research and took notes to use in our writing. We started our new science topic about rocks with a rock hunt around our yard. We were amazed at how many different types of rock we found and had a close look at how they were all different. We have been looking at the artwork of an American artist called Eric Joyner. His paintings are quite unusual as they always have robots in them and most of them have donuts somewhere in them! We loved looking at the different designs and then coming up with our own. We had robots doing everyday things such as playing football and going to the shops and managed to hide some donuts in somewhere!
We have been looking at shadows in science and how different they can be. We looked at shadow puppet shows and decided to have a try of our own. We cut characters out of card and worked in groups to come up with a story. After rehearsing our puppet shows we decided the best place to perform them would be through the window. The sunlight shone through window and created a clear shadow on the blind on the inside. We worked out that if we held up our puppets outside, their shadow could be seen from inside the classroom. The puppet shows were great fun!
We have been looking at play scripts this week during our literacy sessions. We looked at the different features of a play script and then had a go at making our own. We then worked in groups to rehearse and then act out our mini-plays. There are some fantastic actors in Dosbarth Porffor! On Friday during Big Writing, we wrote another play script all about the Iron Man.
We have been doing a bit of research this week to find out about the history of robots. We found loads of information on the internet and used our note taking skills to record the facts. We used Spider diagrams to display our work using the Ipads.
In science we had been looking at light and how to reflects off different surfaces. We got the torches out and darkened the room, to see if we could create a light maze. By bouncing the light off mirrors and prisms we could get it to move around our maze. This term we will be doing indoor athletics and gymnastics in PE. This week we have been looking at jumping and how to jump properly. We worked in groups to measure how far we could jump then evaluated each other's jump style. This helped us improve our distances. |
